Ice Hotels

Ice hotels exist for a few months and are then allowed to melt. There are very few of them, so this section is short by necessity; the entry below explains how the structure works and what staying in it involves.

Iglu-Dorf Gstaad

Iglu-Dorf builds a temporary village of snow at altitude above Gstaad each winter and takes it down again in spring. The construction is genuine: inflated forms are packed with snow, the forms are removed, and the resulting domes are carved and, in the larger suites, decorated by artists whose work lasts only as long as the season does. Guests sleep on insulated bases inside expedition-grade sleeping bags, with the interior holding near freezing regardless of the weather outside, and the village runs a bar and a fondue room cut into the snow. Practical details dominate the stay — where to leave luggage, how to dress for the night, where the heated washrooms are — and the walk out in the morning above the tree line is usually what people remember.
